Oldsmobile . How to Charge a Gel Battery With a Regular ChargerGel batteries, referred to as "gel cell," are sealed batteries filled with an electrolyte gel that reacts with lead plates. Generally, gel cell batteries last longer than sealed lead acid batteries, as they resist sulfation. Charging a gel battery with a lead acid charger is risky, since gel batteries require constant voltage charging, versus taper charging provided with lead acid chargers. It can be done if you monitor the charging process closely. When attempting to charge a gel battery with a lead acid charger, you must ensure the peak charging voltage does not exceed 14.7 volts, which would result in dried, non-conductive gel. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Lead acid battery charger Step by Step : 1 Attach the lead acid battery charger to your gel cell battery, connecting the red cable to the positive terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal. 2 Switch the charger settings to 2 amp /12 volt, also know as deep cycle. It's important to set it to deep cycle in order to mimic the charging characteristics of a CVC (constant voltage charger), the type of charger designed to charge deep cycle gel batteries. 3 Switch the charger to manual, not auto. Leaving it on auto will allow the charger to taper its voltage as it senses the gel battery reaching full charge. This does not mimic the CVC type of charge that gel batteries require. 4 Monitor the battery closely during the seven to 12 hours worth of charging, ensuring the voltage output reading on the charger never exceeds 14.7 volts. Also, monitor the charger's reading of the battery's charge. Once a 95 percent charge has been reached, remove the charger. ResourcesBattery Stuff: Battery Tutorial
Oldsmobile . How to Install Halo Lights on a 2001 NeonUpgrading your 2001 Dodge or Plymouth Neon stock headlights to a Halo Projector Headlight assembly can be a very appealing option to give your automobile a sports car look originally found only on BMW vehicles. The halo lights, also called Angel Eyes, are cold cathode tube circles fitted into the headlight assembly. They are not a replacement to the headlamp bulb nor do they add significant lighting but are an addition to the headlamp for fashion and can be wired separately from the headlamp bulb. As well as the halo lights, the package will include a halogen bulb, which is housed in the assembly to provide better focus and reflection onto the road surface. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Halo Projector Headlight Assembly Pliers Socket and driver Wire strippers Electrical tape Electrical connector/quick clampsHeadlight Assembly Removal Step by Step : 1 Open the hood of the Neon and disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Any electrical work done on a vehicle should begin with this step. 2 Disconnect the electrical connection to the headlight. 3 Remove the two restraining bolts that attach the headlight assembly to the vehicle. Set aside to use later. 4 Detach the headlight assembly from the vehicle. Installation of New Headlight Assembly Step by Step : 1 Mount the new halo headlight assembly into the Neon and attach with the factory installed restraining bolts you removed earlier. Some headlight assemblies come with plug-in wiring. If this is the case skip to Step 4. 2 Identify the wire that shares the turn signal bulb found in your headlight assembly and turns on when your headlight switch is pulled out halfway. Connect the two red power wires to it with a wire clamp or quick clamp. These clamps are the easiest to use and do not require cutting into the power source wire. If there are only red and white wires, the red wires will be the power source and white the ground wires. If there are only white and black wires, the white wires will be the power source and black the ground wires. 3 Connect the ground wires to a ground source. You can use the black wire grounding the signal lamp. Since these are now connected to the running light system the halo circle lights will work without the low or high beam lights on. 4 Connect the electrical connection to the headlight bulb. If one does not come with the assembly you can insert your existing bulb into the headlamp bulb slot. 5 Fasten the negative cable onto the battery. Test the lights by first turning on the parking lights, then the headlight bulb, to confirm correct installation. Tips & Warnings It is always wise to wrap the electrical connections with electrical tape to prevent water entering and to secure the wire to the connection. Be careful not to connect the halo wires to the turn signal wire. The halo lights will turn off and on as you signal if you do. While the halo light assembly is legal with the standard halogen bulb you may have the option of purchasing an LED or HID bulb in the package. You need to be aware of your state regulations regarding these before purchase them. The HID bulbs are usually longer than the LED or halogen bulbs. If you purchase them separately you may need an adapter to make them fit. *you become familiar with a job, you always run the risk of undertightening or overtightening things. If you're replacing a spark plug and you don't tighten it enough, it will work itself loose and fail to deliver a spark. If you overtighten a spark plug, you can strip the threads or crack the plug. Similarly, parts that have gaskets can leak if the bolts that hold them aren't tightened enough. But if you overtighten the same bolts, the gaskets will be crushed, causing the fluid to leak anyway. Most really good torque wrenches are expensive, but a cheaper one is good enough to serve your purposes. If you'd rather not spend the money until you're sure that you're really going to like working on your car, borrow a torque wrench just to get the feel of how tight a nut, bolt, or other part should be. Or you can just forget the whole thing. I've never used a torque wrench; my set of socket wrenches accomplished everything quite well for the work in this book. If you are planning to buy a torque wrench, get one 162

If you use a torque wrench, keep the following in mind: Grip a torque wrench well down the shaft (not up close to the dial) and operate it smoothly. ' Tighten a series of nuts or bolts in a sequence that distributes the pres sure evenly, instead of in strict clockwise or counterclockwise order. Oldsmobile . How does a hybrid system works?
Hybrid is where if you go at any speed over 40km/h then you run on gas but if you go slower than 40 you will run on electricity. Chevrolet Lumina APV. * When tightening a series of bolts, tighten them all just until they're snug. Then go back and tighten them all a bit more. Then go back and tighten them all the way to the torque specifications. Doing so ensures that the entire part you're tightening is under even pressure, prevents leaky gaskets, and increases the life of the bolt and the part. This and the preceding tips are good to follow when you're using any kind of wrench to tighten anything. Before using a torque wrench, make sure that the nut or bolt turns freely so that the torque wrench gets a true reading of the proper nut tightness. You can use a lubricant such as WD-40 on the threads and run the nut up and down a few times to free it before using the torque wrench on it. Part I: Getting Started. Adjustable Frenches An adjustable wrench, sometimes called a monkey wrench, is a useful addi tion to your toolbox. (See Figure 2-11.) You probably already have one in the house. You can adjust the jaws to fit a variety of nuts and bolts simply by turning the wheel. I like the very small and medium sizes because they fit into tight spaces easily. Figure 2-11: Oldsmobile . Hammers You may associate hammers solely with carpentry, but they're useful in automotive work as well. In auto repair, you use a hammer to "sweet talk" something loose (like a nut or bolt that's on too tight). You don't use a hammer to whack the tar out of your engine. Oldsmobile .
